Faro is the nearest international airport. You can rent a car and drive along the A22 highway to Lagos in about 1 hour; alternatively, take a train or bus to Lagos city center.
About a 10-minute drive from Lagos city center. Navigate to Ponta da Piedade; there is a large free parking lot at the end near the lighthouse, but it may get crowded in the afternoons during peak season.
The Tourist Train or local bus (Linha 2) from Lagos city center goes directly to Ponta da Piedade. You can also use ride-hailing apps like Uber or Bolt, which are cheap and convenient.
Hike from Lagos city center or Praia de Dona Ana along the coastal trail. It takes about 30-40 minutes one way with excellent sea views along the way.
Join a tour directly at Lagos Marina and take a speedboat or catamaran to reach Ponta da Piedade by sea, which is the most effortless way to visit.
The summer sun is intense. If you choose to hike, be sure to bring enough drinking water and apply sun protection.

Public toilets are available near the lighthouse car park and close to Dona Ana and Camilo beaches. Some may be pay-per-use or have limited hours outside the high season.
Free car parks near the lighthouse and along the access road, although in July and August they fill up around midday and late afternoon. Paid parking at the beaches or in central Lagos is an alternative.
Restaurants, cafés, terraces, ice-cream parlours and beach bars can be found at the nearby beaches (Dona Ana and Camilo), around the marina and in Lagos' historic centre.
Hotels, resorts, holiday apartments, guesthouses and hostels are concentrated in Lagos, around the marina and near the beaches. In August, book well in advance.
Convenience stores, grocers and supermarkets can be found in Lagos and the surrounding area for water, snacks and basic supplies before or after your visit.
Petrol stations and electric-vehicle charging points are available in Lagos and on the main access roads (A22 and EN125).
Pharmacies are available in Lagos (several in the centre) and in other nearby coastal towns. Outside regular hours, follow the local duty-rota system.
Cash machines are available in central Lagos and around the marina. Some boat operators may not accept cards on board.

The limestone formations of Ponta da Piedade were formed tens of millions of years ago. Under the long-term erosion of crustal movements, seawater, and sea winds, the once flat coastline has been carved into today's intricate and varied cliffs and caves. During Portugal's Age of Discovery, Lagos was an important port, and these cliffs were the last piece of land navigators saw before heading out to sea, as well as an important landmark upon their return. The lighthouse at the top was built in 1913 and still guides passing ships today.
The landscape here is entirely shaped by nature. The golden rocks shine brilliantly in the sunlight, creating a strong visual contrast with the turquoise and emerald waters. Locals have given interesting names to many uniquely shaped rocks, such as 'The Elephant', 'The Camel', and 'The Kissing Couple'. Besides the rocks, this is also a habitat for many seabirds, and the vegetation atop the cliffs blooms with wildflowers in spring, full of vitality.
There are two main ways to explore Ponta da Piedade: by land and by water. By land, you can hike along the recently built wooden boardwalks, which are flat, safe, and feature multiple observation decks. By water, you can take a small motorboat or kayak, where the captain will take you into the narrow caves. Looking up at the sky through the crevices, the seawater reflects an incredible fluorescent blue in the sunlight, a spectacle that cannot be seen from land.
Stand on the observation decks at the edge of the cliffs, feel the Atlantic breeze, and listen to the roaring waves. Descend nearly 200 steps to the small pier at the bottom of the cliffs to get up close to the clear seawater. Ride a traditional small wooden boat through the maze-like rocks, listening to the boatman tell stories of each rock. In the evening, find an open rock to sit on, quietly watch the sunset dye the entire coastline golden-red, and feel the tranquility and magnificence of nature.

About 200 million years ago
The golden cliffs are made of limestone laid down in shallow seas during the Jurassic period. Over millions of years, the opening of the Atlantic Ocean, changing sea levels and erosion by waves and wind sculpted the arches, caves and stacks we admire today.
Antiquity
The coast of today's Algarve was sailed and settled since antiquity by peoples such as the Conii, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans. The prominence of this headland made it a natural navigation landmark along the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
15th century
In the 15th century, Lagos was one of the central ports of Portugal's Age of Discovery. Prince Henry the Navigator lived here, and caravels set sail from here into the Atlantic. To the sailors, these cliffs were the last sight of land when departing and the first sign of home when returning.
1 November 1755
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake generated a tsunami that hit the Algarve coast hard. In Lagos, the sea invaded the lower town and much of the settlement was destroyed, as recorded in parish documents and in the reconstruction that followed.
1913
The idea of building a lighthouse on the headland dates to 1883, but the work was only carried out in 1912–1913. The lighthouse entered service on 1 July 1913, built on the site where an old hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of Piedade had once stood.
20th century
For decades the coast was a stage for fishing and trade and, in 1917 during the First World War, for attacks by German submarines on merchant ships off the Algarve. From the 1960s, Algarve tourism turned Ponta da Piedade into a world-famous image.
21st century
Today the site is managed with conservation in mind: raised boardwalks and viewpoints protect fragile soil and vegetation, while the caves are still explored only by sea, in authorised small boats.

The name may be linked to an old hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of Piedade that stood on top of the headland — its ruins are said to have given way to the lighthouse inaugurated in 1913. Local tradition also connects the word 'piedade' (mercy) to the compassion and protection sailors invoked before setting out to sea and gave thanks for upon sighting these rocks again.
Between the 15th and 16th centuries Lagos was one of the main ports of Portuguese expansion. Many caravels are said to have left the bay of Lagos towards Africa and the Atlantic; for men of the sea, Ponta da Piedade was the last 'solid ground' they saw when leaving and the landmark that announced their return home.
On 1 November 1755, the great Lisbon earthquake produced a tsunami that swept the Algarve coast. In Lagos, the sea invaded the lower town and destroyed much of the housing; the reconstruction that followed left marks on the urban layout that can still be observed today.
In 1917, during the First World War, German submarines operated off the Algarve coast and attacked merchant ships between Sagres and Cape St. Vincent. The conflict reached these waters, making lighthouses such as Ponta da Piedade even more important for navigation.
Since 1913 the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse was guarded by keepers who often lived in the tower with their families — a hard and isolated life. With automation in later decades the last resident keepers left, but the light is still active and continues to guide navigation off Lagos today.
It is recommended to allocate half a day. Starting from the lighthouse parking lot, first take the wooden boardwalk on the left to enjoy the eastern coastline; then return to the central area and descend the stairs to the cliff bottom for water activities; finally, head to the right side to find the best sunset viewing spot.
Arrive at the lighthouse parking lot and enter the newly built wooden boardwalk to the left.
Stroll along the boardwalk, overlooking the unique rock pillars and clear seawater from various observation decks.
Return to the lighthouse area and find the steep stone steps (nearly 200 steps) leading to sea level.

In the morning, the light is frontal, making the seawater appear its bluest and clearest, ideal for seascapes. In the evening, the light is soft and golden, perfect for portraits and sunsets. If using a drone, please note local flight restriction policies and the impact of sea breezes. The light inside the caves is dim and the boats rock, so a wide-aperture lens or a smartphone's night/anti-shake mode is recommended.

Lagos is one of the most popular resorts in the Algarve. July and August are the absolute peak season; hotels are hard to find and prices double, so be sure to book early. If you seek a quiet vacation, you can choose resorts slightly further from the city center but closer to the coastline.

Absolutely stunning place! The rock formations and the color of the water seem out of this world. We highly recommend taking a small boat tour through the caves; the captains are very skilled and the experience is fantastic.
Without a doubt the most beautiful place in southern Portugal. The newly built wooden boardwalk is very comfortable to walk on and perfect for a stroll. The sunset views are breathtakingly beautiful.
Nature's masterpiece! Walking down those nearly 200 steps is absolutely worth it. The water is so clear you can see the fish at the bottom, and the golden rocks look amazing in the sunlight. Remember to bring a windproof jacket!
We spent a perfect afternoon here. The cliff views are magnificent, and we also rented a kayak to go through the stone arches, which was an unforgettable experience. The parking lot is free and very convenient.
Breathtaking coastline! Although there are quite a few tourists, the area is large, and you can always find a quiet corner to enjoy the view. You must walk to the very edge to watch the waves crash against the rocks.
This is my favorite attraction in the Algarve. You can enjoy world-class natural scenery without paying an entrance fee. If you come to Lagos, this is the number one must-visit spot.
It takes about half an hour to walk from the city center, and the scenery along the way is great. Arriving at Ponta da Piedade is even more shocking. The blue of the seawater has many layers, it's so beautiful.
